101 and 580 connector project

A direct highway connector from northbound 101 to eastbound 580 to improve street circulation, access, safety, and regional connectivity.

Description

The US-101 / I-580 Multimodal and Local Access Improvement Project is a joint effort by TAM, Caltrans, and local cities to build a direct connector from northbound US-101 to eastbound I-580.

It aims to:

  • Remove regional traffic from local streets, improving circulation and reducing congestion on Bellam Blvd and Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
  • Bolster bike, pedestrian, and bus access — including safer protected bike lanes and better links to transit hubs in San Rafael, Larkspur, Richmond, and El Cerrito.
  • Enhance regional access across the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge.
  • Support economic growth by providing more reliable access for businesses.
  • Current project funding is about $135 million through regional measures, plus $16.5 million in local funds.
