Apply for a transportation permit

You need a transportation permit to move oversize or overweight vehicles and loads on public roads in San Rafael.

Need to know

  • Permit cost:
    • $16 per single trip
    • $90 for annual permit
  • Processing time: up to 48 hours
  • Requires proof of insurance

Before you start

If your vehicles exceeds 13 tons (maximum gross weight) you cannot use a City street unless it's a designated truck route.

Types of permits

Single trip permit:

  • Valid for a laden (heavy load) and unladen (empty) load per vehicle
  • Single origin to single destination
  • 3-5 working day duration

Annual:

  • Valid for 1 year after permit issue date
  • 1 permit per vehicle per route
  • Multiple vehicles and routes require multiple permits

Steps

1. Start the online application

Login to our online permit system. If you haven't used it before, you'll need to set up an account.

2. Upload insurance

Your insurance certificate must include:

  • City of San Rafael named as an Additional Insured
  • Endorsement page naming the City of San Rafael

3. Pay fees

You can pay by:

  • Credit card
  • Check payable to City of San Rafael

Transportation permit fees comply with the State mandated fee maximum for transportation permits.
