Crosswalk signals for unsignalized locations

People crossing a street at a HAWK signalA HAWK (High-intensity Activated crossWalK) signal helps people safely cross busy streets that don’t have regular traffic lights.

It stays off most of the time and only turns on when someone pushes the button to cross.

It's also called a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon.

Where are they in San Rafael?

The first HAWK signal was installed in 2021 on 3rd Street between San Rafael High School and Montecito Shopping Plaza. Two more are planned:

How to use a HAWK signal

For drivers:

  • The signal is dark when no one is crossing—keep driving as usual.
  • When it flashes yellow, someone has pushed the button. Slow down and prepare to stop.
  • When it turns solid yellow, get ready to stop.
  • When it turns solid red, stop completely for people crossing.
  • When it flashes red, stop first, then go if the crosswalk is clear.
  • The light will go dark again after everyone has crossed.

For pedestrians:

  • Press the button to activate the signal.
  • Wait until the WALK sign appears before crossing.
  • Cross when the WALK sign is on and the traffic has stopped.
  • If the timer runs out before you start crossing, press the button again and wait for the next WALK signal.
