Encroachment permit notifications

Before and during your project, you need to provide notice about it.

Start of work

At least 48 hours before your start date, email us this information:

• Encroachment permit number
• Start date and expected duration
• List of emergency contact numbers for this work, including a 24-hour, 7 days a week
  contact.

Public notice

If the work will last more than 1 day, you need to provide notice to the public at least 5 days before you start the work. You can do 1 or both of these options:

• Place signage at the project site
• Provide written notice must be provided to all properties within 300’ of the work site

The notice must identify:

• Nature of the project
• Project limits and the date
• Duration of the project
• Name and phone number of the project manager

Provided us a copy of the notice.

Underground Service Alert

For projects that include puncturing the ground, you need to call 811 or (800) 227-2600 for utility locations prior to commencing, and as appropriate during, any permitted work.

Road closures

If you work requires a road closure, you need to submit a detour map and notification letter to affected residents, businesses, and the Department of Public Works. You need to distribute this information at least 10 days before the start of work. The notice must identify:

• Nature of the project
• Project limits and the date
• Duration of the project
• Name and phone number of the project manager

At least 3 days before the start of work, you need to notify the police and fire departments.

Downtown

For any activity in the downtown area (see map) you need to:

• Notify the Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District at director@downtownsanrafael.org
• Provide written notice to all property owners 300’ from project area
• Proof of notices must be provided to public works prior to start of work
