Guide for serving on an advisory group

Learn how to join an advisory group. Your public service will strengthen our government and make it more responsive to the community.

Step 1: Find the right fit

Explore our various advisory groups to see which ones match your:

  • Interest
  • Availability
  • Eligibility

Consider attending one of their meetings. Review their purpose and bylaws. Make sure you're ready to commit the time needed.

Step 2: Apply

You can apply anytime throughout the year. We review applications year-round, with interviews in the Spring and Fall for upcoming vacancies. Review the list of city officials to see when terms expire.

You can include a resume with your application if you want. Be thorough and share why you're a good fit. applications don't guarantee an interview.

Step 3: Interview

Treat it like a job interview. Prepare by researching the group's activities, talking to the staff liaison, and attending the group's meetings.

Interviews are usually held before a City Council meeting (1st or 3rd Mondays). Councilmembers will ask questions related to the group you are applying for. We'll call you the next day with the results.

What's next

If you are appointed, the staff liaison will help you get started. Before your first meeting, visit the City Clerk's office to get sworn in. Depending on the role, you may also need to:
