Install a Little Free Library for your neighborhood

A Little Free Library is a small, public book-sharing box that encourages reading and community connection. Create and manage one in your neighborhood.

Need to know

  • If it's on private property, you don't need a permit
  • Must follow size and placement rules
  • The City does not maintain or restock them
  • You are responsible for upkeep and safety

Before you start

Make sure you have a location on your own property that is easily accessible to pedestrians and does not block sidewalks or right-of-ways. You’ll need to design or purchase a weather-resistant box, and plan how you’ll stock and maintain it over time.

Where you can place it

  • You can place it on your private property, in any zoning area.
  • You can put it in your front yard (the area between your home and the sidewalk).
  • It cannot be placed in the street, on the sidewalk, or in any public easement.

Safety and access

  • It must not block people walking, biking, or driving.
  • It must not block any pathways or spaces used by people with disabilities, including wheelchair users.
  • It must be securely attached to the ground or to something fixed in place.
  • The box must be too small for a child or person to climb inside.

Accessibility tips (not required, but recommended)

If you want to make your library easier for everyone to use, especially people with disabilities:

  • Make sure there’s a flat, level space in front of it that’s at least 5 feet by 5 feet.
  • Place handles and latches no higher than 48 inches from the ground.
  • Keep the inside of the box no deeper than 10 inches so it’s easier to reach into.
  • Use handles that don’t require twisting to open.

Steps

1. Choose a location

Use a spot on private property where people can easily walk up to the box. Avoid placing it in the public right-of-way.

Send us your proposed location and we can confirm if it meets the rules.

2. Build or buy your library

You can build your own or order one from the official Little Free Library site.

3. Install it securely

Make sure the structure is stable and safe.

4. Stock it with books

Add books for all ages and keep them in good condition.

What's next

After your library is installed, share it with your neighbors! You can promote it through local groups or online neighborhood networks.

Maintain your library

Make sure to keep it clean and inviting. Check regularly for damage, litter, or inappropriate materials.
